The Italians do it better they say. To be frank with you, it think it depends.
But one thing is for sure – they have a decent sense of life-style, a “Gioia Vivere”, a unique “Italian Way”, that things are handled.
They have certain habits and customs that spice up your life that you will never find anywhere else in the world.
That said, what the hell is a “Squillo”?
Patience.
If you are in a long distance relationship then you know that communication is the meat and potatoes of its continued existence.
However, electronic communication, such as cell phone calls and instant messages, can be very expensive.
But what else can you do, when you are sitting in a coffee shop and passionately thinking about your love? Calling 10 times a day with your cellphone could kill you financially, if your love lives in, let's say, Kuala Lumpur and you are in the US.
The Italians are very smart people. In times of rising cell phone bills, they developed a whole new communication system based around the cell phone. After Michelangelo's “David”, “The Leaning Tower of Pisa” and, of course, da Vinci's “Mona Lisa”, another ingenious Italian achievement – “The Squillo”.
Again, what the hell is a “Squillo”?
A Squillo, (squillare: Italian word for “to ring”), is a one-ring mobile phone call, where the receiver of the call is not expected to answer. The phone buzzes once or twice, and all you see is the caller-id. So what's the deal?
Let's say that the adorable and beautiful Antonella is late for her date with Giovanni. So she writes a message, “Sorry, I just crashed my vespa, I'll be 5 minutes late”.
Giovanni could write back, “No problem, I'm waiting”, but instead he sends a “Squillo” – meaning, “No problem, I'm waiting”. See?
The “Squillo” contains a message that only the receiver can interpret the right way. Therefore, the “Squillo” can mean, “Yes, I got your message” or simply, “Yes”, “Where are you”, “Call me back I'm out of credit”, and another thousand variations.
The “Squillo” is meant to be playful and flirtatious.
How can you profit from that you might ask.
Simple.
Just send a “Squillo” when you passionately think about your love. Or when you just miss him/her. These are the “Squilli degli inammorati“, the “Squillos” of the lovers.
The adequate answer to this is obviously to squillo back.
I suggest you try it.
You will be surprised how marvelously good it feels to receive a “Squillo” when you least expect it.
So simple, so free of costs, and so beautiful! Viva Italia!
Ring, ring.
Your friend,
Eddie Corbano
This made me laugh! I like the idea of a ‘Squillo’ to let your partner know that you are thinking of them. My ex partner and I used to write text messages and sometimes end with ‘NN2R’ meaning ‘no need to reply’, so that the other person just felt warm and fuzzy inside and didn’t feel any pressure to reply, especially if they we were at work or something.
My present boyfriend set up his new phone to show a photo of the incoming caller – this works great with friends, trouble is, he is a bit unsure of how to operate his new phone and accidentally set it to show a photo of me EVERY TIME someone rings him, and he cannot get rid of this little feature! How we laugh 🙂 xx
This article creeped me out a bit, because I'm in a long distance relationship with someone who lives in US. And I live 15000 killometers away in Kuala Lumpur. It was just plane WOW. But otherwise, I like this whole idea of squillo (despite the fact that the word also means prostitute in Italiano). In fact, I am in LOVE with this whole website! Thanks Eddie, for putting this together!
Hi,
it is better to underline the fact that the word “squillo” in Italian means also “prostitute”. So this article, for an Italia, may also sound like “Miss your love? Use the magic of a prostitute”. Well, that would be an advice I wouldn't follow, would you?
But, except for this detail, I really like your web site and the articles I've read so far: really helpful and kinda energizing.
Thanks!
I've stopped contact with you, but you don't even care. You haven't tried to contact me once. Did I mean nothing to you? I wish I could be sure I meant nothing so I can stop hoping. Are you not contacting me because you don't want to hurt me? Or is it because you just don't care and you never think of me? I think of you often. My birthday passed and no happy birthday wish. Yours is coming up and all I can think of is how I want to do something special for you. Why is it so hard to get over you? I feel like such a fool.
Dont worry you're not alone.Hi, my name is May. I found your page by looking through “break up qoutes” on google. I saw some interesting comments and decided to share my situation hoping it could help 🙂 My EX and I were together for 4 years…sounds short but with other long term relationships, we did go though a lot together…we were VERY close since I was his first long term “real” relationship, and vice versa. I'm 26 by the way and so is he. June of this year we decided to not see each other for two months because things were going down hill. We argued non stop mostly because of my insecurity, but not merely because of that. He has done pretty inappropriate things that soemone who is taken shouldn't. He's never cheated whatsoever (sexually at least I guess). He's gone out of state before to stay with a gf and lied to me about it; had caught a message on his phone sent from him to taht girl he visited out of state saying “ive always been in love with you”. His excuse: he was drunk. I tried to forgive him for that but becaue of those little things my trust became thinner and my insecurities and fears grew bad; so we decided to give each other space for two months…BUT two weeks before this break up thing happened, we met a friend, at a place where my EX went to school for skydiving. The friend happened to be a SHE. She's 40. She turns out to have a lot of similarities with my EX but I wasn't worried. They started to talk more and more each day about skydiving and other things they both like to do the same that were not my interests. my EX and I are totally opposite by the way. We have a lot of differences…Anyway, so we broke up for two months; during that time, he talked to her everyday and hung out with her a lot because they went to the same skydiving school. I got back with him a week ago like we talked about, but after a few days, this Monday, he officaly broke off with me and said “I like somebodyelse”; and I wasn't surprised that it would be the lady he went to school with. He said he can't take his feelings back for me and should decide to just break up. It's so unfair. I have to move on though. I don't know what to do. I've been crying non stop. I go to Nursing school and this isn't the right time for me to be going through this. I want to get over this soooooon 🙁 The woman messaged me on FB and told me not to worry because he wouldn't date someone way younger than her and that shes bisexual. I'm wondering what could happen next. He decides to pursue her still 🙁
Here in Malaysia we call that a 'miss/missed call'. 🙂
i like it. and it works…it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :DDDD
I liked this article! It made me laugh! I will be sure to pass this onto my Italian friend and see whether we can arrange this “Squillo” 🙂
Great idea! I love it… but I think the telephone companies will hate it 😉
